Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) has received the approval for a polypropylene (PP) project at its Kochi refinery in Kerala. The company's Board of Directors at a meeting on 19 December, 2023 gave the nod to an investment of Rs 5,044 crore towards setting up of the PP unit to meet the petrochemical demand in the country
The proposed polypropylene unit is designed to produce 400,000 tpa, and will be constructed in about 46 months from the date of the investment approval. Through this, the oil and gas company will advance its strategic goals towards a sustainable future, and the project will meet the requirements for packaging films, containers and more. The project will be funded in a 65:35 debt-equity ratio
The company operates a propylene derivative petrochemical plant (PDPP) at its refinery in Kochi which produces critical import substitutes, such as acrylic acid, acrylates, oxo-alcohol, and other niche petrochemicals
Polypropylene has applications in segments such as packaging films, sheets, boxes, containers, bags, homeware, and articles of day-to-day use
